The Historical Processions Foundation of Mendrisio was established in 2008. It was a formal act that represented a small but important change in the history of the organisation of the Processions, officially sanctioning the interest in wanting to preserve and promote these two events, which are among the oldest in the Ticino Canton.
Actually, those who sit on the Board of the Foundation are surrounded by many people. They especially include the inhabitants of Mendrisio, people who voluntarily spend many hours of work ensuring that everything is ready, preserved and renewed for the next edition. People who are keen on the Historical Processions because they are either part of their family tradition, or because they acknowledge the uniqueness of these events and appreciate the fact that they can contribute to their implementation.
The complex organisational machine is active during the whole year under the Foundation's supervision. Work groups specialised in defined sectors are guided by people who have been active in the framework of the Processions for many years and coordinate the work. Some are in charge of recruiting the figurants, some of informing the schools, some of the horses or clothes, and others seek financial and organisational support or solutions for renewals and restoration works.
Regarding the coordination of the two parades, we must also mention cooperation with the Mendrisio Parish. The city of Mendrisio and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs are important partners in the organisational framework of the Processions for the conservation of the precious Transparents and of all the material that must be carefully put away after Easter. Particularly conservation and restoration of the Transparents is a delicate theme, considering the precious nature of the paintings for which the consultation is requested of a specialist who has developed special sensitivity and competence in this framework, namely Jacopo Gilardi.
The regional tourist bureau punctually accompanies the work of the Foundation in terms of communication and promotion, also acting as the point of contact for those who seek information about the events during the year.
