Sites not to be missed
Easy to reach as it is a few kilometres from Como and Varese, pervaded by Swiss values and Italian culture, the Region of Mendrisiotto and Lower Ceresio comes as quite a surprise. Bordered by Lake Ceresio to the north, the Region is surrounded by two extremely scenic mountains, and more besides. Mount St. George, which was decreed by the UNESCO in 2003 as World Heritage of Humanity for the important paleontological findings, and Mt. Generoso, whose peak can be reached by a cog railway, and which is one of the leading tourist targets of the Canton of Ticino.
The Region has extensive lands cultivated as vineyards and counts several wine cellars that have often won awards at international competitions for the quality of their products , besides (da aggiungere) cool genuine grotto restaurants, taverns and refined restaurants that serve sophisticated dishes. The hills of the Region are often dotted by olive groves and covered by thick chestnut, robinia and beech woods, a landscape that invites excursions.
Theme itineraries with didactic panels that explain the wine growing and historical characteristics of the Region, encouraging the discovery of excellences and curious details. The land of the lake offers breathtaking views and proposes restful recreational moments. Do not miss a visit to the Muggio Valley with its Nevère, Roccoli and Graa alpine huts, and, again, to GeoParco delle Gole della Breggia with its Cement Path, a particular track inserted in an area of the park that has been recently reconverted. The schedule of regional events offers an extensive choice of cultural initiatives.
A political centre since the Middle Ages and from the time of the landvogt, Mendrisio is a very dynamic city and the capital city of the district. Its land extends to the districts of Arzo, Besazio, Capolago, Genestrerio, Ligornetto, Meride, Rancate, Salorino and Tremona, from Mt. Generoso to Mount St. George. Mendrisio's Historical Centre, which is a pedestrian area, has artfully preserved its ancient appearance, enhanced and embellished by recent renovations.
Special features worthy of mention include the extensive cultural offer and the presence of the famous Academy of Architecture. A city and a Region to be discovered!
